The Pomegranate Tree.
From the planting of the sapling to when the first fruit is ready for harvest takes three years and the tree matures after five years.
Once mature the Pomegranate tree can bear up to fifty kilos of fruit per year and it will bear fruit for a minimum of seventy years and up to one hundred years.
As little as £ 8,- per tree per year will allow a farmer to tend to the tree until it has reached maturity, and from then on for a minimum of seventy years the tree sustains itself giving the farmer long term employment, income and stability.
This in return decreases the amount of Heroin within our communities and creates a unity with the People of Afghanistan and ourselves.

POM354 projects follow a three-pronged approach, namely:

Tree planting
Next planting season, early spring 2009, POM354 will start an extensive tree planting scheme in Nangarhar Province (and any others, as demand and finances will allow). You may choose to donate directly to initiatives such as:
- Adopt a Pomegranate Tree
- Donate (a) Pomegranate Tree(s)
This will involve a yearly contribution of £ 8,- over a period of five (5) years. Such amount will ensure your tree reaching maturity and, from then on, providing the farmer with a steady income. An added bonus will be that you will (by e-mail) be informed, at regular intervals, about the tree's progress as well as that of the farmer and his family, village, tribe, and any other relevant information.

If a long term commitment is not what appeals to you, this may well be the option for you. Any funds received under this heading will, accumelatively, be used to plant and maintain as many trees as possible.
Our commitment to the Afghan farmers is long term and varied, so whatever your contribution to this effort may be, you can rest assured that the sum total of all the contributions will have a substantial impact and your part in it is essential.

As in any endeavour, aimed at viability and long term sustainability, infrastructure is a crucial factor. The natural pomegranate fruit needs proper storage facilities if optimal returns are to be obtained. To provide such facilities locally is an important part of POM354's efforts.
Another essential ingredient is to develop a local capability to process any or all of the orchards'yields.
There are many applications for products derived from this extremely versatile fruit. Worldwide demand for many of these products is steadily increasing, making it more than worthwhile to process them locally.
Within the context of POM354, extensive research, and in some instances initial product development, has been done by its initiator, Mr. James Brett, and others to test viability, demand, and pricing of pomegranate related products.
